Yes, this is true. If everything works as per the plan, the commuters from the National Capital Delhi will now be able to reach the Financial Capital Mumbai, in a time duration of just 12 hours.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India has come up with a proposal to construct Delhi-Mumbai Expressway which will pass via jam-free areas, hence reducing the travelling time between the two cities.

The construction work of Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is a part of the Bharatmala Pariyojna, which is responsible to look after all the development of expressways in India.

What is the Plan for Delhi-Mumbai Expressway?

The government has planned to complete the construction work of Delhi-Mumbai Expressway at a cost of ₹60000 crores and in three years’ time duration.

As per the reports, the project aiming to reduce the travel time between Delhi and Mumbai is planned to progress in four phases. Out of this, the construction on first and last phase, Delhi to Jaipur and Vadodara to Mumbai, is already in progress.

The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will pass via Delhi-Gurugram-Mewat-Kota-Ratlam-Godhra-Vadodara-Surat-Dahisar-Mumbai.

Once operational, the travel time from Delhi to Mumbai would become 12 hours, which is around 4 hours less than the existing railway route that takes minimum 16 hours.

The maximum speed on Delhi-Mumbai Expressway has been at 150 km/hour. Also, this route will shorten the total distance by 106 km between the two metropolitan cities.

The Progress

The concerned authorities have already started the land acquisition process for the Delhi-Jaipur stretch. The process is expected to be completed in the next 12-15 months. For the last phase of Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the central ministry has begun awarding construction projects to different companies at a cost of ₹44000 crores.

Other Road Projects Under Bharatmala Pariyojna

Besides approving Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Nitin Gadkari, the Road Transport Minister also approved many other expressway projects, such as Delhi-Meerut, Delhi-Amritsar-Katra, Kanpur-Lucknow, Ahmedabad-Dholera and Chennai-Bengaluru.
